Welcome to the Intelligent Systems Laboratory

The Intelligent Systems Laboratory, or ISL, represents a group of faculty and students undertaking high quality research in intelligent systems. The ISL is part of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, FL. We take a broad interpretation of the term intelligent, but the large majority of our work involves artificial intelligence and all the technologies derived therefrom. Our focus is in using such technologies to build systems that encompass both hardware and software, and are of practical use in human endeavors.

A significant part of our funded work is in modeling human behaviors. This is particularly important to the simulation and training community, both military and non-military alike. In tactical training, simulated training scenarios generally need to represent other intelligent entities with which the trainee will have to interface. Our research has centered on the use of Context-based Reasoning to model such intelligent entities. Other techniques developed at the ISL include Template-based Interpretation, neural networks, and others still early in development. We have used some of the above techniques to develop the capability to learn and build models of human performance by automatically observing humans perform actions on simulators. This promises to reduce the model development effort significantly, as well as make the models more realistic.

Focus is also placed upon Context-Based Reasoning (CxBR). CxBR models intelligent agents for use in a variety of environments where tactical behavior is required. This technique focuses on the idea that only a certain set of actions and procedures should be required for a given mission. As that mission evolves, it may be necessary to switch to a new set of actions and procedures, but still maintain a list actions which only contains those that are necessary.

Another area of interest is in the validation and verification of intelligent systems. Naturally, if systems are to be built for commercial or industrial use, they must be adequately verified and validated. The ISL has cooperated with researchers from other institutions in this endeavor for the last several years.

The ISL is looking for collaboration with funding sources interested in our line of research, other faculty interested in collaborating in areas of common interest, and outstanding students interested in furthering their education. As a result of our military sources of funding, we are especially interested in Doctoral and Master's students who are US citizens. However, there are other contracts on which US citizenship is not required.
